When I think of New York City, I immediately think of Broadway. I mean, there are also excellent museums, historical sites, the Yankees, pizza, and cheesecake, but our favorite thing about the city is the Theater District. Every time we’re in town, we see something new, and the girls look forward to it all year. This time around, we started our trip by seeing Moulin Rouge on Broadway, and let me tell you, it’s a FUN show!

Disclosure: We’d like to thank Moulin Rouge! on Broadway for the tickets. As always, our opinions are honest and our own.
Located in the Theater District, the Al Hirschfeld Theatre is close to plenty of dining options and hotels. Los Tacos No. 1 is often our pick for a quick pre-show dinner, though the area has many choices. We stayed at the New York Marriott Marquis, which is within walking distance. The 42nd Street/Port Authority bus station and subway stop are also nearby if you’re coming from further away.
Walking into the Al Hirschfeld Theatre is like stepping back in time. Set in turn-of-the-20th-century Paris, it follows the story of Satine, a dancer at the famed Moulin Rouge. The Duke of Monroth has his eye on her, but she falls for the American, Christian. It’s a triangle as old as time, but how does it end? It’s a story of truth, beauty, freedom, and love.
As a teen, Moulin Rouge was one of my favorite movies. I loved everything about it – the glitz, the glamor, the music, the love ❤️ And if you enjoyed the movie, you’ll LOVE the play. It has all of the chaotic magic of the movie, and you’re right in the middle of it.
Ellie collects souvenir cups from Broadway shows, so we couldn’t see Moulin Rouge on Broadway without getting a cup! Most theatres (including the Hirschfeld) have an assortment of alcoholic and nonalcoholic options, as well as candy and other snacks, so make sure to be a bit early if you want to get drinks/snacks.
Like the movie, the Broadway version is a jukebox musical. It combines songs from various artists into a fantastic soundtrack that supports the epic love story. The songs are woven together and used as dialogue between the characters in a way that works seamlessly.
It was a fantastic show!! From a content standpoint, I’d probably say it’s for the 13+ crowd, but both girls thoroughly enjoyed it! If you’d feel comfortable with your kids watching the movie (knowing that there is implied sexual content and scantily clad women), then the Broadway version should be fine. According to the Moulin Rouge on Broadway website, it is recommended for ages 12 and up, and kids under five will not be admitted.
After the show, we stopped at the stage door to get our Playbills signed. Andy Karl (The Duke of Monroth) was a hit and had the girls laughing.
Solea Pfeiffer (Satine) was so sweet and took her time talking to every person who waited outside the door.
I love it when the cast takes the time to interact with the fans—Pepe Muñoz (Santiago) was another fun one to chat with!
Fantastic show, fantastic theatre, fantastic night! If you visit NYC in the next few months, plan to see Moulin Rouge on Broadway! Boy George will play the role of Harold Zidler from March 28 to May 25, and Jordan Fisher will play the role of Christian from April 15 to July 20.
Moulin Rouge is currently on tour throughout the United States and will launch a world tour in April 2025. It is 2.5 hours long, including one intermission, and can be seen on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre – 302 W 45th Street.
Have you seen Moulin Rouge yet, either on Broadway or on tour?? Which musical should we check out next?
