If you’re traveling with a large family as we do, finding somewhere to stay can be particularly challenging and while we could always get two separate rooms, that can be a very costly option and it’s not as fun as staying together. When combined with the high hotel prices of a major US city, a trip to Washington DC for our family of seven can quickly get very expensive. Enter the Kimpton Hotel Madera in the Dupont Circle area of Washington DC and their amazing Queen+Queen+Sofa Bed+Bunk beds room!
A huge thanks to the Kimpton Hotel Madera for hosting us on our Washington DC getaway. We received a discounted stay but all opinions are honest and my own.
The Kimpton Hotel Madera is tucked away on a tree-lined street, somewhat removed from the hustle and bustle of Washington DC but still close enough to be walkable to many of the city’s most popular sites. Only a couple of blocks from the Dupont Circle Metro Station, the hotel is a great option for those wanting easy access to public transportation.
The room has a modern feel to it but not in a pretentious way- the look is warm and inviting with splashes of color.
There’s an alcove to the side of the room that houses the bunk beds along with a sleeper sofa and another TV. This area is what sealed the deal for our family since the room comfortably sleeps eight- plus, how cool are bunk beds on vacation?! Our kids played many games of rock, paper, scissors to figure out the sleeping arrangements during our stay since they all wanted a turn on the bunks!
The bathroom was clean and I really appreciated that the sink area was separate from the toilet/shower room since it makes it so much easier to get all seven of us ready in the morning when multiple people can use the bathroom area at one time.
The kids LOVED the extra tv (and XBOX!) in the alcove by the sofa bed/bunk beds and it was a fun way for them to unwind in the evenings. I cannot think of anything that would appeal to teen boys more than a tv and video games!
Another fun Kimpton touch is the animal print robes in the closet! Every Kimpton room comes complete with robes so that you can be comfortable while you travel. The kid-sized robes were a fantastic surprise and Ellie adored lounging around in the smallest one.
We had a wonderful time during our stay at the Kimpton Hotel Madera and would not hesitate to stay there next time we’re in Washington DC. My only issue, and really, it’s a minor one, is that the lobby is so small and can only comfortably accommodate a handful of people at a time. Our family alone filled all of the available seats in the lobby and while normally that’s not an issue, it was pouring rain during our entire stay and we used our vehicle instead of public transportation which meant that we (along with lots of other people) waited in the lobby for the valet. This wasn’t a make it or break it issue for our family but if you enjoy relaxing in the hotel lobby, just be aware that it’s really small.
Overall though, our stay was great and the design of the room worked perfectly for our large family! The Kimpton Hotel Madera offers fantastic room configurations at a reasonable price considering the proximity to public transportation as well as the walkability to popular locations in the city making it a great option for families (large and small!) traveling to Washington DC!
Sounds like an awesome place to stay!! So far we’ve made one standard hotel room work for the 6 of us but I know that will have to change as the kids get older. Is this a hotel chain that can be found in other cities besides Washington, D.C?

Yeah, when the kids were younger we were ok with standard rooms but now we either need two or something bigger! Kimpton has hotels in over 30 cities in the US so definitely somewhere you could stay as you’re traveling!
